A Proven Method to Eliminate Bad Habits

"Your net worth to the world is usually determined by what remains after your bad habits are subtracted from your good ones."

Throughout your lifetime you have established many habits. Some of them are good and some are not so good. This article is about how to replace more of the bad ones with more of the good ones.

Remember, if you sow an act you reap a habit. If you sow a habit you reap a character. If you sow a character you reap a destiny.

Ben Franklin's secret to his self-improvement was to focus on each virtue he wanted to acquire and make incremental improvements by noticing his behavior each day. He focused on one virtue each week. Listed below are the 13 virtues he settled on.

1. Temperance - Eat not to dullness; drink not to elevation.

2. Silence - Speak not but what may benefit others or yourself; avoid trifling conversation.

3. Order - Let all your things have their places; let each part of your business have its time.

4. Resolution - Resolve to perform what you ought; perform without fail what you resolve.

5. Frugality - Make no expense but to do good to others or yourself; i.e., waste nothing.

6. Industry - Lose no time; be always employed in something useful; cut off all unnecessary actions.

7. Sincerity - Use no hurtful deceit; think innocently and justly, and, if you speak, speak accordingly.

8. Justice - Wrong none by doing injuries, or omitting the benefits that are your duty.

9. Moderation - Avoid extremes; forbear resenting injuries so much as you think they deserve.

10. Cleanliness - Tolerate no uncleanliness in body, clothes, or habitation.

11. Tranquility - Be not disturbed at trifles, or at accidents common or unavoidable.

12. Chastity - Rarely use venery but for health or offspring, never to dullness, weakness, or the injury of your own or another's peace or reputation.

13. Humility - imitate Jesus and Socrates.

Commit yourself to using Ben Franklin's method four times over the course of the next year (52 weeks) and then once a year thereafter to keep on track throughout your lifetime.

One Thing That Can Make the Difference Between Quitting and Persevering

"No matter how carefully you plan your goals they will never be more than pipe dreams unless you pursue them with gusto."

What's the big difference between the person who perseveres and the person who quits?

Enthusiasm!

The Greek heritage of the word enthusiasm literally means "God within you". No one has ever succeeded without being enthusiastic, full of spirit, hope and action.

Enthusiasm creates the emotional charge that can help you overcome seemingly insurmountable challenges and obstacles. Use enthusiasm to achieve your goals, eliminate undesirable habits, engage in thinking and planning, and develop a positive mental attitude.

NOTE: a motivational secret weapon for self-starting is the powerful 3-word phrase DO IT NOW! Say this to yourself and then immediately get into action (or annotate specifically when you will do it).

If you want to feel enthusiastic, act enthusiastically. This is not the same as "fake it until you make it". Remember that your feelings follow your actions. Be enthusiastic!

You Need Goals and Plans to Succeed!

"Without goals, and plans to reach them, you are like a ship that has set sail with no destination."

You can program yourself for success using goals and plans. A goal is something you want to achieve. A plan is your specific way of achieving that goal. Both are ideas from your mind.

First, you must decide what you want to happen - in your spiritual life, in your relationships, with your health, in your financial life, and even your recreation and hobbies.

Then you must plan your way, define easy steps to take toward your goals, keep focused on each goal.

Then you take the very first step, actually take the action required to achieve each goal. And another step every day, be persistent, stay focused.

Measure and reward your success – things that get measured get done, things that get rewarded get done again.

Don't demand perfection in your goal setting and achievement, that's not really "human."

Feeling great about those things you have accomplished creates in you the spirit to dream new goals, create new plans, take action and focus on them to achieve your goals.

Now, what are your goals and plans?
